French paste is a vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of using faceted cut glass, cut in the shape of a real gemstone, instead of using gems. This process, which was developed in the 1700s, created the look of a sparkling gemstone or diamond but cost much less than real stones.

A wonderful French paste cluster ring from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Originally worn as a pin, the flower-like cluster has since been converted to a ring for modern day wear. Crafted in 14kt yellow gold and sterling silver, this conversion piece features a sparkling cluster of French paste stones at the center of a mixed metals setting. Set in the middle of the cluster is a large, open back French paste crystal which sparkles beautifully in the light, similar to that of a real diamond. The surrounding eight stones are each individually set within a closed back setting and also act as the prong setting for the large center stone, creating the appearance that it is floating within its frame. A smooth yellow gold band with split shoulders perfectly completes the design. A spectacular conversion piece, it would look exquisite worn on special occasions, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size 6, but could easily be resized if desired. The French paste cluster centerpiece has a diameter of a little more than 1/2" and rests approximately 1/4" above the finger when worn. The band measures 3mm wide at the back.

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling setting. The French paste crystals are all intact and securely set.
